Project Synopsis
The area of embedded computing is earmarked to lead
the next wave of key technology development; currently
90% of all computing devices are used in embedded
systems. Our homes and workplaces are full of embedded
computation, from systems to control washing machines
to video players or cell phones. Technological progress
is about to take this growing use of embedded systems
in our daily lives a step further. It is envisioned
that soon embedded systems will be integrated into
many more everyday items and networked together, allowing
us to create our own smart environments.
Within this context, Cork Institute of Technology
(CIT), through an inter-departmental collaboration
between the Department of Electronics and the School
Computing and Mathematics, has established the Technologies
for Embedded Computing (TEC) Centre. Funded by Enterprise
Ireland through the Applied Research Enhancement (ARE)
Programme, the TEC Centre utilizes the core research
philosophies provided by the Centre of Adaptive Wireless
Systems and Advanced Control Group (situated in the
Electronic Engineering Department), and is developing
a highly skilled environment to exploit the enormous
potential of research in embedded systems. The TEC
Centre aim is to translate and integrate this potential
with the indigenous Cork industries.
The Centres will seek to do this by creating a one-stop-shop
for Industry R&D support in the region. This will
focus upon communicating the state-of-the-art in research
to companies in the region, upon creating partnership
activities, and in particular upon practical prototyping
projects that engage researchers in industry relevant
initiatives
Although it is still at an early stage, the TEC Centre
is working with over twenty companies. Having successfully
completed numerous projects, it is currently engaged
in a growing number of practical initiatives in the
broad area of wireless sensor networks, smart card
development, vehicle technologies and online development.
