A
MapUme end user is anybody having a smart phone with a
set of functionality similar to iPhone (cellular network,
WLAN, 3D accelerometers, internet connectivity) who want
or need to share online her/his real-time location information
with friends and colleagues. A longer term goal is to
provide an indoor localisation system as affordable as
outdoor GPS, while empowering even non-expert users to
build their next killer indoor location-based application
within their own domain. We currently experience a growing
demand for location-aware services.
Global Positioning System (GPS), while useful outdoors
is ineffective indoors. Typical indoor systems based on
infrared, ultrasound, and ultra wide band are inhibited
by limited range. Alternatives are Wireless Local Area
Network (WLAN) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) based
wireless location systems with the first commercial products
now available.
However, acceptance of existing systems is hindered by
two issues.
- Their poor adaptability to different environments
- Their high system ownership cost due to the labour intensive and cumbersome system installation and maintenance.
